About Project

Works were undertaken within temporary works cofferdams, to provide both a dry working area and also protect the river from pollution during construction activities. Extensive measures were taken to protect the sensitive environment including fish migration.

Carnroe Weir and Lock are located on the River Bann, near Kilrea. The weir measures 182m long and includes two fish and two elver passes. It is faced and dressed with locally sourced basalt stone.

Carnroe Lock is a Scheduled Monument. It is 6.3m wide and 39.5m long & permits navigation through Carnroe Weir. These structures date back to the 1850’s.

A structural inspection, in 2016, identified defects including displaced masonry, undermining of the weir structure, voids in the weir apron, bulging and displaced masonry in the pier walls and failed embankments. In 2022 Deane Public Works commenced works on the Carnroe Weir Rehabilitation scheme, to undertake repairs & improvements to these structures, on behalf of our Client, Waterways Ireland.

This complex scheme aimed to conserve the natural, archaeological, architectural, engineering and industrial heritage of this inland waterway and its structures. It required phased seasonal works, as the Lower Bann drains 43% of the landmass of Northern Ireland.
