Last week Deane Public Works participated in a UK-wide initiative called ‘Open Doors’, aimed at opening up the construction industry to young people to give them an insight into the industry in which we work, and encouraging them to explore the diverse career pathways and opportunities available.
We hosted some fantastic students from St. Macartan’s Primary School, Clogher, St. Kevin’s College, Lisnaskea and Carntall Primary School, Clogher.
The students had the chance to go behind the scenes on-site at the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant in Clogher. Visitors were able to have a first-hand look at the civils work that we are currently undertaking, as well as gaining an understanding of how the wastewater treatment plant works and the long-term benefits that new facilities will provide.
Our site engineer Jack gave students an insight into a day in the life of a civil engineer working on a live construction site, complete with a site tour and a chance for the students to have an interactive go on a (switched off!) digger.
We also heard from NI Water’s HLA Katie Harper, and our own apprentice Molly Darcy, who both shared their experiences of taking on an #apprenticeship role in the construction industry.
Thank you to the schools who participated in this event, all the students were an absolute credit, and we couldn’t have done it without you. Thanks also to Ollie Lecky and Katie Harper from Northern Ireland Water, Jacqui from Jet PR and Construction Futures for organising this valuable event, it was a brilliant success and a great day was had by all!
